Lexapro and Zoloft have been in the market for years as useful in the treatment of depression. They are also good for dealing with symptoms of anxiety. As such, these two drugs are the most frequently prescribed antidepressants in the U.S. today. However, all is not well with these drugs.

Lexapro has come under criticism first of all because of their marketing. These drugs are SSRIs, meaning that they are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. Lexapro, Zoloft, and some other antidepressants are aggressively marketed, and doctors who prescribed it were compensated by the pharmaceutical companies.

In 2009, the DOJ accused the company, Forest Labs, of targeting unapproved symptoms with their marketing campaign. They also did not disclose the side effects, and were in trouble for paying kickbacks. This dishonesty in marketing cost Forest Labs over $300 million.

There are other problems with Lexapro and Zoloft. Women who get pregnant while taking these drugs often have children with severe birth defects. The emotional and financial toll of injuries due to prescription drugs are awful, and include heart defects, PPHN (or Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension of the Newborn), spina bifida, defects of the limbs, defects of the skull, and cleft palette and cleft lip. Other congenital birth defects have also been reported.

Even more disturbing is that many women are prescribed these antidepressants during their pregnancy in order to avoid debilitating depression and anxiety. However, these women are often not apprised of the dangers to their unborn children. There are, in fact, several cases on the books currently in which women were prescribed these drugs without being told of the dangers, only to deliver children at term who had severe birth defects.
